Tragedy as woman struck by hit-and-run driver in Washwood Heath

Reports are coming in of a tragic hit-and-run accident in the Washwood Heath area of Birmingham which took place on Tuesday (5 April).

A female pedestrian was struck by a car near the junction of Mickleover Road, just before 4.40pm, and the vehicle was later recovered by police.

Police and ambulance crews rushed to the scene of the accident and the road sealed off to all traffic as paramedics tried to administer emergency medical aid to the victim.

A police spokesperson stated that officers recovered a white VW Golf abandoned near the scene of the horrific hit-and-run accident.

All traffic, including buses and taxis, were re-routed following the shocking accident and the road closed off as police conducted an investigation. A police cordon was placed around the scene of the tragedy and bystanders were ordered to stand back as emergency crews worked hard to save the life of the victim.

The first reports indicated that the victim of the hit-and-run was seriously injured, but this was followed up by eyewitness reports on social media platforms that the woman had died despite the best efforts of the emergency medical crews.

The police spokesperson said: “Washwood Heath Road is closed near the junction of Mickleover Road after a woman was hit by a car. The road will be closed for a long time. This is a very serious incident.

“The female pedestrian was hit near the junction of Mickleover Road at just before 4.40pm.

“We’re in the early stages of our enquiries but we have recovered a VW Golf abandoned nearby.”

An eyewitness at the scene told I Am Birmingham that people were heard weeping at the scene, and distraught children had to be comforted by parents.

Police advised motorists to avoid the area due to road closures as officers continue enquries into the serious incident.
