Police catch 65 dangerous drivers during speeding crackdown in West Midlands
Police have responded to public concerns about dangerous drivers by carrying out a crackdown in speeding hotspots across the West Midlands region which has resulted in 65 drivers being booked.
Officers from the Road Harm Prevention Team have been carrying out increased roadside checks as part of a targeted crackdown on cruising motorists who have turned local streets into speed tracks.
Following an increase in collisions and hit-and-run accidents – including fatalities – on the region’s roads police have been working with local residents and community groups to identify hotspot areas where speeding has become a regular and dangerous occurrence.
A police spokesperson, said: “More than 65 motorists were caught exceeding the speed limit and booked for traffic offences.
“One driver was clocked going a shocking 106mph in a 40mph zone.
“We’re committed to promoting road safety and reducing the number of accidents and make our roads a safer place for everyone.
“We have been working with local residents and community groups to identify hotspot areas where speeding is a problem.
“We have been using a range of methods to monitor the speed of vehicles, including speed cameras and hand-held radar guns.”
Specialist police teams have taken action in parts of Birmingham, Dudley and Solihull where serious concerns about speeding have been raised by alarmed residents.
Operations have been carried out along Heartlands Parkway, Fort Parkway, and Bromford Lane in Birmingham.
Police have also been conducting speed checks along the Stratford Road in Shirley and Duncan Edwards Way in Dudley after safety concerns were raised by locals who live in fear of being run over by reckless drivers who speed along residential streets.
One local resident in the Bordesley Green area of the city told I Am Birmingham that life has turned into a “daily nightmare” for pedestrians because of reckless drivers who speed down local roads – day and night – as if they are in a Fast & Furious film.
Inspector Tom Bowman, from the Road Harm Prevention Team, said: “We are committed to cracking down on dangerous drivers and offenders who pose a serious risk to themselves and other road users.
“We have been actively listening to residents’ concerns regarding road safety and have carried out targeted operations in areas where speeding is a problem.
“These operations have been successful in reducing the number of dangerous drivers on the roads and improving the overall safety of communities.”
