“They’re saying it’s the biggest swing in UK political history,” says Birmingham Ladywood independent candidate Akhmed Yakoob, who is confident he is going to become the next MP for the constituency, replacing Labour’s Shabana Mahmood.
The hotly contested seat could go either way, following strong campaigns from both candidates, which included a key focus on the war on Gaza.
Although confident of a win, Yakoob is determined to take on Labour in the 2026 local council elections regardless of the results tonight, saying he won’t stand himself but will stand candidates.

Independent General Election candidate for Birmingham Selly Oak, Professor Kamel Hawwash – former chair of Palestine Solidarity Campaign – says a Labour ‘super majority’ as predicted by the exit poll is “unhealthy” and “undemocratic” as it would give Labour the “license to do whatever they want”.
He also said the predicted victories for Reform and Nigel Farage suggest the country is moving to the right, which he describes as “worrying” and “based on divisiveness”.

Exit poll data predicts Labour has won by a landslide in the general election, bringing 14 years of Conservative rule to an end.
The poll suggests Keir Starmer’s party is set to secure victory with an estimated 410 seats – equating to an overall majority of 170 – according to the poll by Ipsos UK, jointly carried out for Sky News, the BBC and ITV News.
The Labour results dwarf the Conservatives, who are projected to win around 131 seats, compared to the 365 they achieved in 2019 under Boris Johnson’s leadership.
The poll also suggests that while Labour have likely secured a landslide victory, they may fall short of beating the 179-seat majority won by Tony Blair in 1997, with a landslide even on a smaller share of the vote than that secured by Jeremy Corbyn in 2017.
