I Am Birmingham
Welcome to the official ‘I Am Birmingham‘ online news website.
I Am Birmingham began an online video project in 2009 with the mission to showcase the best of Birmingham, England’s second largest and uniquely diverse city.
The platform later evolved into a digital magazine, featuring articles, news, reviews, interviews, special features, galleries, video and multimedia content; offering a non-profit platform for young writers, media students and enthusiasts and passionate reporters and content creators.
I Am Birmingham is now one of the West Midland’s leading and trusted professional news media outlets, staffed by accredited journalists with decades of experience while also training and mentoring a new generation of reporters and multimedia content creators from across the region, especially from underrepresented communities.
Alongside news articles and in-depth written and pictorial features, we were one the first Birmingham platforms to utilise and prioritise video content to promote the best of of the city’s culture, arts, lifestyle and give an insight into everyday events, personality profiles and quirky tidbits.
We welcome contributions, content suggestions and ideas and especially love focussing on aspects of Birmingham life that may have been missed in the mainstream, from urban exploring to street art secrets; and cosplay culture to the underground city poetry and music scene. While we share day-to-day news and updates, we also like to focus on alternative news, and spotlight what makes Birmingham special and different.
The website has broken a number of national and international viral stories as well as leading socially powerful news features that have been picked up by global media outlets and audiences. Additionally, our video work has been included in mainstream news reports across continents, as well as documentaries created by the BBC and Channel 4.
With a Twitter following of over 70,000+ and millions of video views, we hope to continue to champion both regional journalism and an opportunity for new writers and filmmakers to reach out and inspire others.
I Am Birmingham prides itself as a progressive, ethical and innovative news service adhering to IPSO guidelines. We champion diversity, inclusivity and representation and are one Birmingham’s only major news platforms to be run and primarily staffed by individuals from Black, minority ethnic and LGBTQI+ communities.
As part of our commitment to better representation and platforming unheard voices, we work with several local community empowerment organisations and charities to amplify the voices of migrant communities through focused media training and editorial opportunities.
